ARTS AND CRAFTS

4Cats Art Academy
Hello. My name is Joey Simon. I homeschool my 6 yr old son, Jet and are part of Wondertree. I also have twins that are two. I was wondering if you would mind posting that I run an art school in Fairfield and run special home learner classes. The classes are based on montessori philosophy as I have trained as a Montessori teacher. The idea is that they are not simply craft classes. Each month we study a different artist and incorporate the medium of that artist into our curriculum. How in depth we go depends on each child and their interest. Part of Montessori is that children are ready for real and truthful adult information and enjoy learning in this manner. From my experience, I would say I agree. My degree is in psychology with a minor in art history. I have classes for ages 3 to 12.

Thank you,
Joey Simon

Hoey, Timothy - Home-based Art Classes
Hello, My name is Timothy Hoey. I have just moved back to Victoria with my family after several years in Calgary.  In Calgary I was Director and an Instructor at Jon Williams Studio and Art Supplies.  Our class format of individual one on one instruction in a small studio class setting lent itself well with many homeschool families.  Often times both children and parents participated in classes.  I have set up a similar home-based business here in Victoria, where I am offering classes at various times throughout the week.  I believe all artists should have exposure and if possible experience to a variety of styles, techniques and mediums, thereby giving them the confidence to express themselves and appreciate the expression of other artists.
I can be reached for questions or comments at 598 0458, or email at timothyhoey@shaw.ca.  Thank-you for your time,  Timothy Hoey

Abramoff, Caren: Home School Strings
This is an exciting new class based on the nationally recognized strings program in Victoria's public schools. As a homeschool graduate, I want to give home learners access to the same opportunity of learning the violin, viola, or cello in a fun group setting. Kids learn to listen to and enjoy music and work as a team, by learning an instrument of their choice.

No previous musical experience needed- just get set for learning and fun! The class is also ideal for kids who are taking private lessons and want to play in a group. Each week, we'll practice new techniques, learn to play familiar tunes, and do music reading and theory through listening and hands-on playing activities.

About me: I have a diploma in Violin Performance from Mount Royal College in Calgary, as well as ARCTs in violin performance and piano pedagogy. I teach private violin and piano lessons, and am completing a Bachelor of Music from the Vniversity of Victoria. My experience organizing group lessons and voluteering in string classes has shown me what an advantage children who play a stringed instrument enjoy.

What: Learn the violin, viola, or cello by playing in a string orchestra
Where: MacLaurin Building, University of Victoria
When: Saturdays, 10:30-11:30 am, September-March
Who: ages 8 to adult (minimum 6 in the class, max 15)
Cost: $192 ($8 per class) family rate (2 or more people) $150 each

For more info, contact Caren Abramoff by email: caren_5@hotmail.com
check out my website: http://violinvictoria.practicespot.com

WRITING

Leanne Baugh-Peterson
Profile: Leanne Baugh-Peterson's interest in writing for film and television began when she produced, directed, and wrote the 1996 documentary "Rethinking Health." She soon jumped to drama, and has written several screenplays including "Sanctuary," a third place winner in the Television and Film Institute Screenwriting Competition and "Tokyo Nights," a television movie in development with CTV. Leanne was recently awarded an Alberta Foundation for the Arts grant to write a new film script titled "Chasing the Stars." She is also a member of the Writers Guild of Canada and Women in Film and Television.

School Program: Leanne offers a hands-on, interactive creative writing workshop that takes students through the writing process from initial idea to finished piece. In consultation with the teacher, Leanne works with the students to provide inspiration, enthusiasm, encouragement and writing tools to help them build a story, poem, play or screenplay. Leanne's goal is to awaken the writer within every student.

Her phone number is: (250) 595-0573.
